Los Llanos Plains

This vast tropical grassland plain is said to be one of the best places in the world for bird-watching. Ibis, Orinoco geese, numerous species of heron, and the endangered jabiru stork are among the 470 resident species. Mammals also live here including the capybara, the world’s largest rodent which can weigh up to 175 pounds! Crocodiles, dolphins, and piranhas swim in the waters of the Apure and Orinoco Rivers. The wet season, May to October, makes travel difficult with flooding. In the dry season, November to March, the birds and animals tend to congregate around water sources.
