Mexico, the last post (Originally posted 26 Nov 2015)
Country

This blog is late. It is the first “late” blog in more than five years. Last time we were too exhausted to worry about a blog after a hell of a bad week at the office. This time we have no such excuse. Our week was relatively easy. We cruised by some of the Mayan sites along the Guatemalan border and enjoyed the 20 November celebrations in the coastal town of Chetumal. I had even written the text for our last post from Mexico well before post-day on Sunday. There was, however, a problem. We read the post one after the other then sat looking at each other.

“It isn't any good, is it.” This was a statement not a question.
“No,” said Jo, “it isn't.”

A few days later in the southern Belize town of Dangriga I realised that no amount of editing would make things better and I archived the file. The problem is simply that we love Mexico and with love comes not only great joy but other emotions, frustrations and desires. Maybe it will be possible to summarise “our” Mexico in the single page we give to the blog someday, but not just yet. The country is just too complicated for that. A thousand years of tumult still push and pull the modern country in every imaginable direction and the more we learn of the history the more confused is our view of the present.

So, our search for a Mexican enlightenment ends by a muddy estuary in another country. We will be be back for sure, but our advice to all those who have not yet done so is to come and have a look for yourselves. Don't bother with Cancun or the Baja. These are for relaxation. Go to the heartland on the high Sierra where the modern country has been hammered out of silver and blood, for here are the great stories of Mexico and the true reward for the journey.
