Dos Border

Nov 07, 2007 - Dos Border

Soo it turns out that the Baja 1000 is starting on Tuesday about 100 miles from where I am right now!

If you are not familiar with it the Baja 1000 is a 1000 mile long, gruelling offroad race from the Mexico/california border to the tip of the Baja peninsula to Cabo San Lucas. There are all sorts of vehicles from $1million super trucks to pickups to VW bugs to dune buggies to motorbikes.
Given all my trailriding when I was younger I have always loved these types of events. For some reason I thought the Baja 1000 was in February so I was really suprised to hear about it today.

I took the Wing in for service and a few guys were chatting about the Baja race. So now i am going to Encinada Mexico the day after tomorrow. I may volunteer and would love to work with a team, so if anyone has connections to teams in the race please do let me know!

The Wing was in for service today. There was nothing really wrong with it but it being a new bike to me and all and me heading into central america I wanted to make sure it was in good shape. They changed all fluids, new plugs, adjusted valves, sync'ed the carbs, new rear brake pads and misc lube and tweaking. The tech said the bike was in great shape, many thanks to Ken the previous owner. Thanks also to the guys at Escondido Cycle Center.

Since the bike was in almost all day I just did some repacking and bought some misc. bits of gear I think I'll need moving forward. One thing that becomes clear when travelling like this is the importance of gear. When 3 small hardbags on a motorbike have to house your toiletries, your clothes, your riding gear (warm and cool), tools, parts and other misc travel things, packing is crucial.

ok so tomorrow is around San Diego, then I stay near the border. The day after is Encinada and the Baja!!!!
