Departing Brisbane

Date of update

I have just recently started this blog, whilst in Outback Queensland in the mining town of Mount Isa. For those who haven't been following my story on facebook I left Melbourne at the start of May and made my way up to Brisbane, where I planned to look for work to fund some more travelling.( I hope to document the first part of my journey on here when I get the chance.) I was only in Brisbane for a couple of days when I secured a job in an outback motel, which is the reason I ended up in Mount Isa, approximately 1800km from Brisbane.

Journey to the Isa

Date of update

The route from Brisbane to Mount Isa takes me along the A2 which starts at the end of the M2 Ipswhich motorway and climbs the great dividing range to Toowoomba, It stretches 2025km to Camooweal close to the Northern Territory. The view is outstanding as the road climbs and windes its way into Toowoomba. After Toowoomba it leads you through Dalby and it starts to feel a little more country. On Thursday night I made it to Roma with at least an hour of daylight to spare but not enough to get me to the next main town where i would find accommodation.

Off to Borroloola

Date of update

After working at the Rodeo in Mount Isa I was ask by another couple to work for them at their next job. They had heard I was heading north towards Darwin. Their next job was in Borroloola which is a good bit off the direct route to Darwin, but that's why I don't make too many plans, this is how you end up in weird and wonderful places and sometimes it can get you away from all the tourist places. I left Mount Isa on Wednesday 12th August and rode to Barkly Homestead. There was only one small place on the way, its called Camooweal.

Can we Escape

Date of update

I continued the journey north to the next town Mataranka which is famous for its thermal springs and the story We of the Never Never. This was an autobiographical novel about the first white women to settle in the area back in 1902, it was later made into a film. I had a quick cuppa in one of the few cafes where again my time out was spent in the company of one of the locals. From there I continued to travel to Katherine to look for Cocos Hostel which I had been advised to stay in by a biker that arrived at the Pink Panther Motel in Larrimah that morning.
