Coastal road
Since our last update we've been up to north of Goa (Anjuna) and have ridden all the way back down south some 650 kms to Kerala and this is what happened...So, we relaxed for a day in Palolem in south Goa and headed north to Panaji on 28th. Didn't like the busy-ness of Panaji so kept moving to find Calangute beach. Everything seemed more touristy and expensive to us in Calangute, so after a quick lunch we moved further north to find Anjuna beach.
Anjuna was beautiful and so we got ourselves a room and went for a walk along the beach. To our good fortune there was a live band playing in one of the bars so obviously we had to check it out. Be rude not to.
We ended up staying till after sunset enjoying hippy-style Franco/Anglo/Indian music.
A very long day's ride followed a good night's sleep. We rode about 300 kms all the way to near Bhatkal in Karnataka.
Check this load out! Oncoming traffic had to pull over to let this big boy pass.
On route we stopped to take in the awesome sights of Murudeshwar temple.
We asked around and found a secluded beach near Siraley. Once we were satisfied with the site we went back to town and got some food. We still had plenty of daylight left to pitch our tents and get settled.
As we had nothing else to do and it was dark we went to sleep early (like 7 pm early). It was stifilingly hot so I'd left my tent open. At around 8.30pm I awoke suddenly to see someone shining a torch into my tent! So I shone my torch straight back in the eyes of whoever it was outside. Blinded, he asked me to turn my lights off, so I did and got out. Turned out it was a couple of local fishermen who'd heard there were "foreigners" camping and thought we might have some drink for them!
Disappointed, they bid us good night and left, warning the tide might come in as far as our tents.
We woke in the morning to see that the tide had indeed come and just about kissed our tents overnight. No harm done.
So we packed up and left but could only ride about 150 kms before it got too hot and too tiring for both of us. When we saw a lodging house by the roadside at some non-descript town we pulled in and got a room for Rs 500.
Nothing happened here. I don't think anything ever has!
Today we pushed about 250 kms and are currently in a very nice, ocean-front "resort" with a balcony just outside Kunnoor in Kerala for a princely 20 quid. Given that tonight's room is costing 4 times as much as last night's, it is expensive, but as we turn inland tomorrow we thought we'd splash out a bit. Plus we have wifi thrown in. What more could you want?
More soon. Good night.
