This UNESCO World Heritage Site is often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas". Building commenced in about 1450 at the height of 7,800 feet. This 100-acre site contains temples, homes, irrigation systems, warehouses, and steps that descend the mountain. There is no direct road from Cusco, but a 3.5-hour rail journey will take you to Aguas Calientes where shuttle buses zig-zag up the mountain to Machu Picchu.
