Karakoram Highway
Abbottabad-
Pakistan

* One of The 7 Wonders of the Motorcycle Travel World as decided by the crew of the Adventure Rider Radio RAW Podcast *

Construction of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) started in 1962 by the governments of Pakistan and China, and opened to the public in 1978. The KKH follows one of the many routes of the historic Silk Road. It runs about 1300 km (810 mi) from Kashgar in China to Abbottabad in Pakistan. As an improved adventure tourism destination, the KKH  gives unforgettable access to mountaineers and wheeled travellers to its many natural beauties.

Best ravelled in the spring or early autumn. Summer monsoons during July and August can cause occasional landslides while harsh winters can shut down highways for long periods. The border crossing at Khunjerab Pass between China and Pakistan is open only from May 1st to December 31st.
