Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines
49.983429, 20.053793
The mining of salt commenced in the Middle Ages and ceased in 1992 due to heavy flooding. The mine remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a much-visited tourist site. The underground tour is a 2-km walk taking you through 20 caves, many of which have original sculptures carved by the miners. The Underground Cathedral is made entirely from salt with wall decorations of The Last Supper and other Biblical scenes. Other decorations include an altar, chandeliers, and statues. It was created by three miners in their spare time and took 68 years to complete.
