Slovenia and Beyond
Slovenia is great and Dober dan to you all!NESS: Slovenia is great and Dober dan to you all! We started in the North and Bled, which was rather Butlinsesque. Lorenz quickly whisked us past, foiling my attempts to hang in a town and catch a band and art gallery, to Bohinjska Bistrica. We were told by our first cafe owner that they must speak English, (a very depressing approach, I thought, but oh well). The older people loved being greeted in their own language I found.
(Wed, 28-6) We hang out a day in the Alps and I spent a day walking six hours up a moderate mountain trial whilst Lorenz struggled with life at ground level! Beware Aussies- moderate in Slovenia is more than difficult for a walk in Australia. I ended up running down parts of the mountain just to take the strain off my protesting thigh muscles.
(Thurs, 29-6) Next day Italy and well groomed men- Lorenz´s hatred of the slow speed limits and frustration at the masses of traffic moving slowly rather coloured things (if you know him you´ll know exactly what I mean! and a surprise toll to pay only helped.). As the Aussie youth say it was, ´all good´, and we escaped the industrialized eastern coast of Italia for the industrialised coast of Slovenia and after twelve hours of riding crashed in the camp site from hell oomph music till after midnight and starting again at 6am- little buggers.
(Fri, 30-6) Into Croatia and met a lovely chap on the coast, which we found much more beautiful from a distance, (the coast that is). Much the same south we hear and so we head back for South Slovenia and find that the Croatian hinterland is gorgeous, also rather cheaper than the Italian tourist pleasing coast. I also found some totally amazing wild strawberries, heaven. Slovenia and chill out at riverside campsite with a nice walk and beer.
(Sat, 1-7) Easy riding through Slovenia, go to rebuilt castle but can´t get in. Have a vegie pizza with mystery topping that ends up being cauliflower, carrots, corn and capsicum (red pepper for the UK); different. Drag Lorenz into the town for an internet cafe and we have found an ace bar with free net, hence the long entry, and hopefully a band this evening. Wine is 150SIT and that´s about one pound fifty although the red does taste like vinegar. Bye for now.
