Around Europe in 3 months.

Together, always together…  That´s our guiding principle for our every day’s life and for our adventures.

We are Ale and Mo (Alejandra and Modesto Ponce Izurieta), we are 47 and 54 years old, born and living in Quito Ecuador. We have been together 18 years and got happily married 2 and a half years ago.

We travel on “Maria Germania” our BMW 1200 GSA, we also have “Tenerita” a Yamaha XT660z that was our wedding chariot.

This 3 months ride around Europe is our second long adventure, there are many short ones, the first long adventure was another 3 months ride around south America, from Ecuador to Patagonia and back; that´s another story to tell.

We planned a hybrid trip, half scenic half touristic, we wanted to visit the main cities in Europe and to enjoy as much as possible the country side and small roads.

We could not take our bike with us, we did not find a good option to do it; a bit late we learned about Air Canada´s “Fly your bike” program. We decided to rent another GS in Madrid, expensive but we got a good deal and I had the option to test the new 1250 motor.

Our adventure started near “Puerta del Sol” in Madrid.

Very nervous about the beginning of our three month adventure and ready to enjoy it, we left Madrid on the way to Burgos, we used the main road.
We stopped in Segovia, beautiful place and aqueduct, some problems to park the bike, lunch and we continued to Burgos. Nice roads, not crowded at all, good sightseeing, fully enjoyable even on the E5 (Autovía del norte).

Burgos is a nice city, old Castle (fortress) on the hill, we found a small path behind the castle to enjoy the city view and the castle walls.

From Barcelona to Montpelier long boring highway, already in France we began to pay multiple tolls.

Automatic gas stations charge you 100 euros on your card and give you back the difference one week later, do not use debit cards, only credit cards, they won´t be able to revert a debit card payment.

Breakfast in Savona, couldn’t skip Genova on the way, impressive city, too much city just to drive by as we did.

We headed to Chinque Terre (Five lands), a group of incredible towns hanging to the hills in front of the sea in a region called La Spezia.

Nice and twisty road down to Monteroso al Mare, the first town, beautifull and very touristic, ice cream and up again.

Extremely twisty and brake burning road to Vernazza, we could not get into the city because there where some issues with the road at the end.

Florence, Tuscany and Venice

Growing this curious feeling of knowing, being, living, eating and smelling Tuscany is today our reality.

We began full of illusions with the doors of Italy open to surprise us! It should be noted that every ride starts with my OM NAMAH SHIVAYA ritual, our mantra.

I am Ale, the co-pilot

We started ... we decided to spend three nights in Florence, a warm city that filled our soul with art.

Then a super road trip around such iconic villages as Monterrigione, Volterra, San Gimignano; undoubtedly a pleasure trip for the spirit; even with some rain.

From Venice to Milan? No way, there is much more fun at the north. We took the way to Arabba, passed by Lago di Santa Croce (Holly Cross Lake), we took the SS51 not the highway tunnel.

In Arabba a well-known bikers paradise begins, Stella Ronda, an amazing 64km twisty and hilly road around the Dolomites; one of the best rides in our whole trip. Back to Arabba for the night. Next day we took the road east to Canazei, Bolzano, Merano and finally to another iconic place, The STELVIO PASS, in uppercase of course.

We had to find the best way to get into Switzerland, we did. Müstair, a small border town at Switzerland´s extreme south east where they speak Romanche, the fourth Swiss official language.

We crossed The Biosfera Val Müstair and Swiss National Park, beautiful. We kept going west and try to cross Albula pass, closed with snow. After enjoying St Moritz Lake we took the road to Julier Pass; from my point of view this Alpine pass is like whole Switzerland, perfect road, perfect curves, perfect mountains… Everything is perfectly beautiful.

Back on the road… From Zurich we turned east to S. Gallen, beautiful city close to the lake Constance (Bodensee), where I lived and studied 33 years ago, it was so nice too share these remembrances with Ale. In St. Gallen we visited the Swiss Milling School where, as a former student, the principal received us as old friends.

We turned south to Appenzell, one of the most typical Swiss towns and cheese production areas. The countryside between St. Gallen, Appenzell and Vaduz is very nice, lots of small roads as we love.

Germany at last... Long time no see!

We had to leave Czech Republic through the Big Gate that in our case means the least common road. Guess what… We found it.  From Prague, to avoid E55 highway we took a parallel road 608, kept going to Lovosice and took the road along the Elba River (30), so nice. In Ústí nad Labem we took the 528 and 248 up to Petrovice at the border and… Hallo Deutschland, aufwiedersehen Tschechische Republik.

We did not know what to expect, this country was a mystery for us. We met a couple of Czech Harley friends that gave us a non conventional route but I felt that I had to spend some more time on it. Finally we found our first destination and it helped us fix the route… Czesky Krumlov.

I have worked all my life with wheat and its by-products, Austria´s farewell was the beginning of thousands of kilometers of golden wheat, barley and rye fields with a resulting increased hearth rate on me.

Holland, here we go.

Finally we were heading to The Netherlands, the decision was 350km of Autobahn, we did not enjoy the ride but we wanted to get to Amsterdam early.

The city is nice, the romantic water channels and beautiful architecture contrasts with the constant smell of weed and the excessive promiscuity. This is not a city for us, we enjoyed it briefly and kept going.

We planned to be in Holland for a few days only, we found a route to regain mind peacefulness. First a castle, one of the nicest ones, Muiderslot.
