Mammoth Mileage and great fun
Wednesday turned into a mammoth mileage day but it was fun from beginning to end. I decided to go for an early start and set the alarm to get me up in time to be on the move at first light and avoid any traffic issues getting clear of the coastal towns near Biarritz. Was heard to mutter "this is supposed to be a f-ing holiday to myself as the alarm beeped insistqntly. Up and about on time and was feeling all smug as I set off after completing all the bike checks with a professional touch and packing all my stuff quickly. Rode out of the hotel gate turning left to arrive at a roundabout and wonder why everyone was driving the wrong way around it - whoops! Good job it was early and nothing much on the road! Avoided motorways as much as possible and didnt pay a toll all day but still managed in the region of 600 miles. Spanish roads are fantastic and the N630 between Salamanca and Caceras should be ridden by everyone with a bike! I accepted in the afternoon that Tarifa was too far to reach and that I would not make it past Sevilla. I peeled off the N roads and headed for the hills West of Sevilla on the basis that they looked nice and must have places to stay. After 55 miles of single track roads and deserted villages I have to admit that I was having a few doubts but I stuck to the principle of heading South West and eventually stumbled on a camp site with bar with about half an hour of daylight left. Mammoth day of 14 hours riding came to a perfect close with soup followed by pasta for dinner then a large beer. Slept soundly in the tent until 5AM and then started to feel the cold. All the gear survived and you will have to read the next entry to understand why I have typed this one on an Arabic keyboard.
