We made our way into Arkansas today, the eighth state visited by the remaining treshombres2004 team. Nelson made his way to several more states during his journey from South Dakota to Alaska.
We hear that Nelson is safely in Alaska and is now at the Koella fishing camp. He put some serious miles on his bike in making the trip. He wins the road warrior award for the year.
We traveled on several winding, twisty roads today, which made for pretty good riding. The many changes in elevation also helped provide for interesting riding.
We traveled along the northern part of the state, stopping frequently to cool down. At one point the NOAA weather radio reported 95 degree temperatures with a heat index of 110. At 50 miles an hour the effect of the wind lowers your apparent temperature by about 20 degrees. That makes the riding a little more comfortable, although stop and go traffic is difficult and stoplights are miserable. We stopped about every 45 minutes to re-soak our water vests and to re-hydrate.
Our last stop of the day prior to arriving in Jonesboro was a c-store in Hoxie, Arkansas. Bo was walking down the aisle looking in the coolers for something cold to drink. He looked behind the last cooler door and rather than soft drinks, there stood Cleve, who had walked in the cooler to cool off a bit. We both ended up taking a couple of turns in the cooler.
While in Jonesboro we stopped by the bar at the Holiday Inn down the street. Jonesboro is a dry city so you have to join a private club to order a drink. Imagine Saturday Night Fever mixed with Saturday Night Live. A bad bar band; complete with a flat singer (uh, her voice was flat) and a mirror ball made it a total experience. We left quickly and made our way to dinner.
Tomorrow we complete our trip.
