Day 11
Country

We set off this morning aiming to ride about 150 Kms which would bring us to the area surrounding Lake Wamala where we guessed there may be campsites. When we got here we found that there was nothing much to see. Apparently it’s a salt water lake and all we saw were swamps. I tried eating something which sounded like pushan – its basically maize flour mixed with water and made into a stoggy lump. That’s the best I can describe it. Taste wise, well, it tasted of nothing. Bland. Completely bland. So I chucked some salt and chilli powder on it and forced it down. It was starchy so should give me some energy. Ron was not as foolish as me – he opted for rice. By 2.30 we had already found a place to stay. We had managed to blag free camping at the Esuubi café near Mityana. Esuubi is a charity apparently founded by a British couple. Esuubi supports the local community and they run an orphanage and school and all the proceeds from the café and the craft shop, which sells wooden carvings, leather goods and other gifty things, go towards the project. Phiona, Nora and Richard the security guard were so welcoming and kind to us. We had some coffee which was a rare thing in Uganda and ate at the restaurant. The café closed at 6 and after the staff went home we pitched our tents on the veranda under shelter as it looked like it was going to storm. In fact we could see it raining in the distance and did not want to chance being out in it. But the rain never came. We sat and played cards till late and went to sleep on the concrete floor. The traffic on the main road made for a bad night’s sleep.
