The how and why
Country

Ever since I found out that there were only about 800 mountain gorillas remaining in the world I've wanted to go to either Uganda or Rwanda to see them in the wild. So after our 2015 India trip one day when Ron and I had got together and were chatting about where we might go next, I suggested Uganda. Ron was OK with that, or at least he didn't say he didn't want to go to Uganda. So the more we chatted about it the more we got used to the idea of visiting a country where neither of us had been before or knew anyone. When we had both decided that we were definitely going to make this happen (around September 2016) we started looking into it more seriously. Where do you even start? Google it of course! So I did. But it didn't seem like there were many motorbike hire companies in Uganda. The ones I did find wanted ridiculous amount of money like $80 per day per bike which was way beyond our budget. I also came across Roadtrip Uganda a company who hired 4x4s so I thought I'd give them a ring and ask whether they hired bikes too. Although they didn't hire bikes, Bram (one of the owners) was very helpful and put me in touch with someone else who might be able to help. They in turn put me in touch with someone else who happened to be a Boda Boda driver. Boda Bodas are bike taxis used by locals all over Uganda. They are omnipresent and affordable mode of transport. Almost all the Boda Bodas we saw were little 100 cc Bajaj Boxers. Ron and I prefer to ride what the locals ride because they are easy and relatively cheaper to fix should something go wrong without having to wait for the likes of BMW or KTM to ship the parts over to you. So, that's how I met Ssemanda Charles who owned 8 Boda Bodas and agreed to hire us two bikes. We did the deal over the phone and once we had worked out we could afford the trip we set a date and booked the flights.
