Day 13
Country

I had slept so well that Ron had to wake me up at 7.30! We left soon after keeping the option of returning there for another night open. When we reached Jinja falls half an hour later we found a “proper” campsite called Nile River Explorers right by the river Nile of course. It was run by South Africans by the look of it and had everything a camper could want. We had a huge breakfast and set up camp. Then we thought we’d go and check out the falls. Except the falls no longer existed. About four years previously they had built a dam which had killed the falls and all the rapids in the area. None of the guide books or websites I had consulted mentioned this. Disappointed. So we went the other way to see the source of the river Nile instead. What should’ve been a short ride into town turned out to be a 20 mile jaunt because I took a wrong turn and only realised after we had gone quite a way. Never mind. My dad used to say you’re not really lost so long as you know that you’re lost. It’s when you don’t know you’re lost that you’re in trouble. Some say that the source of the river Nile is further south of Lake Victoria in Rwanda but others say that it springs from the lake itself before heading north to become the longest river in the world. Anyway, we went there and had a look but didn’t go on the boat to actually see the water springing up. It started to get really hot so we came back to the camp site and chilled for the rest of the afternoon.
