Day 16
Country
We knew that Huyen's cafe round the corner sold cappuccino so we headed there early as we had a lot of miles to cover and needed to make an early start. We had to reach Danang today to swap Ron's bike. After breakfast we headed north on the highway. I felt that the ride was boring on highways. The dogs on roads, little bikes darting out of side roads without looking and people driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway kept us awake and alert and that in turn kept us alive.
We had stopped for a break at some random beach resort and I was taking a picture of our bikes and this guy comes over and gestures to me to take picture of him. I said OK and when I went to take his photo he said he did not want his photo taken but he pointed to two smartly dressed, beautiful ladies and asked me to take their pictures. He had another man with him so I assumed the two women must be their wives or girl friends and I took their photos holding some banner. We wondered whether they were beauty queens or something. Anyway, after I took their photos they all left. They did not want copies of the photos or anything. Bizarre!
We found out later that the banner read Happy New Year!
We were in Danang by 2.45 after 7 hours of riding. After getting Ron's bike changed we checked into what was probably the worst hotel we had stayed in on this trip. It was grotty, damp and smelt disgusting. But it was cheap, we were tired and it was only for one night. It was also where we had the most expensive meal of the trip - the bill was 1 million VND! The food wasn't the good either.
