ARGENTINA
Country
We headed south from Villizon on nice smooth roads going down hill rapidly and the temperature rising into the 30´s. (Great change from Bolivias snow, cold and bad,bad roads) We also finally got some high octane fuel after the 78 octane fuel in Bolivia. The road followed the bottom of an enormous valley with multi coloured walls on both sides ranging from green to purple, red and orange. We stayed in a quaint little village called Pummamarca with a cute park in the centre and GREAT and CHEAP restaurants!! Heaven. The towns claim to fame is that the cliff walls overlooking the town have 7 colours in them. A few hours drive and we were in Salta, the largest town in the area. We stayed in a hostel with 3 spinsters running it and they thought we were so funny- Belinda set up shop at the front door selling off all our warm weather gear to passing tourists. We enjoyed many carne (meat) restaurants and great red wine, all for US$5!! Heaven again- Argentinas devalued dollar has made the most expensive country now the cheapest!! and our favourite so far!! We are staying in 3 star hotels and having a hard time spending US$25 per day, including fuel. One thousand kilometers to the east was the largest waterfall in the world- Iguasu Falls, on the border of Brazil and Paraguay and Argentina. It is easily double the size of Niagra and Vic Falls (in Africa). It has a drop of 67metres and is 2.5km wide and is VERY SPECTACULAR, but very touristy. It has a constant mist cloud hovering over it which creates the perfect environment for its surrounding rainforest housing hundreds of tropical birds. Argentina is a huge first world country with modern facilities and great roads. Now is a great time to visit Argentina as the hotels are all hurting and have dropped their prices to 1/4 what they normally charge.
