Friday 25 Sept - Needles - Victorville

We leave hgy 40 to head the 80 miles across the desert to famous Amboy and Roy's cafe. The famous neon sign is a welcome sight as the temperature reaches 110 F. The entire town was purchased for $240,000 a number of years ago and it is hoped that in time it will be restored to its former glory. Call into the diner and you may find yourself being served by a man with a gun but don't be alarmed as this facinating character turns out to be the Sheriff (to the towns 7 inhabitants).

We leave Roy's to the sound of the exploding shells on the nearby Marine Corps range to head for Newberry Springs and the famous Bagdad Cafe. This is the actual building used in the film and it is customary to leave some memento i.e photo's, t-shirts etc on the walls here.

If you have the time take the exit for Daggett before Barstow and head to the ghost town of Calico 3 miles into the hills. This is one of the few remaining original mining towns remaining and has been completetly restored to its heyday in the late 1880's with the discovery of silver in the hills.
