Monday 21 Sept - Holbrook - Williams

No true traveller along 66 can avoid stopping at the "Here it is" signpost at Joseph City.Tradition has it that if this is your first time on 66 you have to ride the rabbit so swallow your pride and have your photo taken then hide it so nobody ever sees it.

Even if you are not an Eagles fan you will no doubt have heard the line "standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona" from the song Take it Easy and therefore we just had to go for a look. This is a great little town with a photo op setup that comes straight from the song.If you have the time head one block east to the old world charm of the "La Posada" hotel built in 1928 with the railway stop at the back door.Photo's of all the movies greats from the 1930's on adorn the walls of the hall outside the toilets???

Even though you might be tempted to motor on down the route you must take exit 233 to Meteor Crater. The five mile drive takes you through a red dust landscape, with nothing as far as the eye can see, to the visitor center. The film that you see before the crater prepares you for what you are about to see...the crater measures 1 mile across and 550ft deep but was caused by a meteorite only 150ft in diameter...amazing.

The once famous tourist trap of Two Arrows is now, like much of the businesses on this part of 66, long deserted and neglected by the traffic on passing on highway 40.

We stay the night in Williams and listen to the trains passing all night even though the motel owner told us there was only two trains a day.
