Monday 07 Sept - Springfield
While the route itself can be a journey of discovery I think it would be a shame to not spend time in this facinating city. The first must see has to be Lincoln's restored house on 6th street. The national park service has purchased a portion of the street and have recreated the area as it would have been in the 1860's. The house itself has much of the original furniture and fittings so you can't help trying the imagine what great events have happened here.
The other must see in the museum that covers all periods of Lincoln's life from the early years through to his time in the white house. Make sure you see the recreation of his lying in state and the facinating Civil War in 4 mins presentation. Even if you are not a fan of Abe you will be impressed after this.If you have time try to take a tour of the old state building where Lincoln pleaded over 400 cases in the old supreme court.
Tomorrow we leave the state of Illinois and cross over the mighty Missisippi into Missourii.
