Tuesday 15 Sept - Shamrock - Amarillo(TX)
For a town with such and Irish name it is located within a dry county whose border extends for another 45 miles west of here. The route out takes you to what must be the strangest museum in the town of McLean. It is dedicated to ranch life in northern Texas but also "the devils rope" otherwise known as barbed wire.It is astonishing just how much stuff they have and the staff are really pleasant.
Following either the highway or 66 you can't ignore the huge cross at Groom which appears on the horizon from about 5 miles away. The structure was built by a local business man and stands at 190 ft making it the largest cross in the western hemisphere.Around the base are life sized stations of the cross.
No trip to Amarillo would be complete without a trip to the world famous "Big Texan".This is home of the 72oz steak which is free of charge to anyone that can finish it in 1 hour, the oldest successful diner was a 69 gent and the youngest was a 11 year boy.
