June 2006: Canadian Rockies
Leaving Calgary I finally reached the Canadian Rockies. I soon learned that summer truly has the worst weather in Canada. Overcast skies and fog ruled the day throughout the trip through the rockies.I had a nice campsite outside of Calgary, but only after hours riding around Calgary trying to find Highway 1 to Banff.
Banff was another one of those places that back home I had seen so many pictures and read so much about that it was rather disappointing. Maybe it was the weather, but my first scenic pullout in Banff had a nice few of an industrial factory-- what's with that.
There was no denying the beauty of Lake Louise where I stopped for lunch and a little nap.
At the one gas station in near Jasper I hooked up with two riders from Florida who were on their way to Coldfoot, Alaska. They also met a Harley rider who had to give up riding because of his vision but was riding his truck up to Alaska. At the end of the day we noticed my rear tire was running low and the next morning my fears were confirmed. I had yet to fix a flat by myself and fortunately for me one of them was an old hand at it and I just had to get the tire on and off the bike. I liked those guys but the were riding to far and fast for me and I told them to go one without me after we fixed the flat.
But instead of rushing off I spent some time enjoying the campsite.
