Day 5 - Baker City to La Pine Oregon

Today we planned a short day - the weather forecast indicated rain where we were headed so we planned to just go until the rain and cold got the best of us - well it never happened - we managed 474kms before we stopped for the nihttp://www.horizonsunlimited.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt.cgi?__mode=view&_type=entry&blog_id=380&id=6699&saved_changes=1#ghtDay 5 Baker City Oregon to La Pine Oregon
Day 5 starting Odometer Reading

Started out at about 8:00am pst - it was about 6deg C so called for all the warm gear we had. My heated hand grips seem to keep my hands warm even though
appear to work on low power - something that will have to be checked seems to be a consensus that it is likely a faulty switch..
After filling up in Baker city - $2.79 PER/GAL, we headed west. Plan was to go as far as possible before the rain that is being called for hit us - one thing to ride in the rain but the rain and cold would prove too much of a challenge
Stooped for a photo op at the entrance to John Day Fossil Beds ( not to self find out who John Day is/was lots named after him in this area)
We made it to John Day Oregon where a group decision was made to stop for a hot chocolate - which turned into a full breakfast -

after a nice 45 minute break it was back on the road -
but i have learned from traveling with Jeff after a breakfasts like that he
was going to need to break for a run. so after about another hour or so we stopped to find a suitable place for a run/hike and found John Day Fossil bed

- Jeff and Alfred went for a hike/run while I volunteered to look after everyone's important documents and money - three reasons to volunteer for such a task:
1 -if i was robbed and might be able to save my funds and give up theirs:)
2 - I am too overweight and lazy for an hour long hike in the foot hills of Oregon
3 - dont want to give Jeff any more photo opportunities to catch me putting on my socks - until i get something incriminating of him - and it will happen
While I was on guard duty I did manage to get some good shots of the area - reminded me of Drumheller

I have also included a picture of Jeff - granted it may not be as bad as the one he took of me but it is harder to get - Jeffery changing his socks period:)

As suspected Alfred was able to make use of his extra gas - i should point out this was because Jeff failed to find a gas station and this was a precaution only - not a necessity -

The final stop for the day was the Bend Oregon City Summit - great way to finish up before heading off in search of our hotel

Lesson of the day - dont count on finding a hotel within the next 25kms - it might not happen
