The Route

I have been working more on the route for the past few days. It looks like we will be reaching the lower 48 within a month. This will give us ample opportunity to see all of the amazing sights along the way without rushing as we did last time on the way up. Our route will take us through the Yukon and down the coast of British Columbia. This remote stretch of road is not only beautiful but is filled with some of the most spectacular scenery on earth. As we begin our journey south many preparations will need to be made. Currently we are in the process of getting the bike ready for the hash conditions that we will need to endure to reach our goal of the southern tip of the South American continent. looking at the map we will plan on starting in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska which is as far as the roads go north. However I am deeply concerned bringing my daughter to this remote area. Last time I camped in the far north we had issues with Polar Bears. despite their seemingly cute and cuddly appearance, these giant animals are highly aggressive and will not hesitate to strike. My main concern is food storage in the area. With no trees it is difficult to stick to traditional wildlife safety precautions. However after talking with park rangers I am planning on using freeze dried food as it limits scent.

After reaching the lower 48 we will travel down the entire length of highway 1 from Seattle to San Diego ("Greatest City on Earth" Ron Burgundy). From southern California we head down through Mexico across the boarder. This section scares me the most. As most of you know, Northern Mexico is run by dangerous drug cartels. We will head as far south as possible in a day. As we continue south we will reach Central America where we will take a ferry ride around the Darien gap to Ecuador, skipping Columbia. For those of you unfamiliar with the Darien Gap, it is a wild place more than 50 miles across of some of the worlds most impenetrable old growth rainforest. Only a hand full of expeditions have made it across.

Upon Reaching the shores of South America we will head south from the lush mountains to the driest place on earth. The Atacama in some places has not seen rain for 10,000 years. This alien environment will be our world for several weeks. However when the ocean of fire is behind us we will find ourselves in the lush wonders of Patagonia. This is a truly special place. The famous mountains of Fitzroy and Torres del Paine are one of the highest of this trip. This wall of rock and ice are the gateway to the end of our route in Ushuaia. This final destination is the southernmost city on earth and will be an incredible end to more than a year of adventure and learning. I will be keeping all of you as up to date as possible as we begin this journey into the unknown.
