Transylvania, the Danube and into Bulgaria
Country
It's been a busy few days since the last update. More mountain roads in the Carpathians. A visit to Bran castle, the supposed inspiration for the Dracula novel, touristy but interesting to visit.
We stopped in Busteni for a few days to go walking in the Bucegi mountains. The cross of fallen heroes dominates the skyline
The second day we stayed in the wooded valley, with the bears, never saw any though
Then headed to the iron gates gorge and the Danube. The statue of Decablus looks like something from antiquity but was only made in the 1990s
The real thing is on the opposite bank and marks Trajan's victory over the Dacian's and the course of the Roman road built here
Today we crossed the Danube into Bulgaria, still in the EU so just a flash of a the passport at the border. Some fantastic roads - smooooth tarmac - on the way to belogradchik.
As we approach the rock fortress comes into view
Used since the first century as a defensive structure, with various eras of building on the natural rock formation. Our room for the night is right outside
