Life on the Road
There is a rhythm to each day in the saddle. Mornings are early starts to avoid the lorries who tend to start later and also we like to avoid the heat. Since we arrived in Siberia we still leave early but after a hot coffee and wearing all the layers we can find.
An empty road and a full tank of fuel are great things to have. Also the large 4x4 Lexus and Mercs are not up yet.
Coffee after an hour is very tasty and a roadside caff will always serve eggs and sausage.
Typical garage and cafe on the road
An early finish also means we have a good chance of getting a room for the night. Our motels (not like a European motel or American motel I assure you. They are truck-stops really and are very basic.) are every 100 miles or so which means we stop at the first one we see after 3 o'clock.
If you want to know the numbers we chug along at 80kph (60mph) and we cover one tank a day for 300km or 200miles. Our aim is 1,000 miles a week.
Lunch on the boil in a bus-stop away from the wind
The afternoon gets busy with cars, white-van man, buses and truck after truck after truck. So an early end to the day brings a beer and supper. By then we are either hot and sticky or freezing cold.
Must go now as it's another early start so we have the road to ourselves until breakfast.
