Update
Lynn check the map. We must be at Acapulco Bay, Fort Morgan!!!
No, it's near our hotel outside of Vienna. We drove 300 miles in rain and cold, and this is the first thing we saw.
Our first stop in Vienna was Saint Stephans Cathedral. The stone pulpit is from the 16th century. The front of the cathedral had measuring devices used to measure bread and cloth. The coloring you see in the photo was a natural production of the stained glass windows.
We first walked to the Opera. You can see an Opera for a pretty reasonable price ($30). The story goes the designer committed suicide because the design was not well received.
Of course there was the candy store along the way.
We then walked over to Imperial Palace (winter). They have added on different design styles since the 13th century. It now houses the President and other government agencies.
Mozart in the Palace gardens.
We then traveled to the most visited structure-Schloss Schonbrunn. This is the 1441 room hunting lodge that was turned into the Summer Palace by Queen Elizabeth Habsburg. She controlled the politics while the King dabbled in economics. We toured the Palace and the grounds. The one gallery was famous for the meeting between President Kennedy and Khrushchev. Austria has an interesting history. There was Maxmillian who was the King of Mexico before being executed. Many marriages were to strenghten political alliances. Sisi is a big draw. She was a Hungarian married to a Habsburg. She exercised all the time while her attendants maintained her ankle length hair. Frequently she did not eat to maintain her waistline. She held the well desired title of the beauty queen of her time. Her famous daughter married Louis XVI. Her name was Marie Antoinette. Sisi died in her 60s from an attack from an Italian separatist with a file. He stabbed her to death.
We crossed the Blue Danube on our way to Berlin. We took the 600 mile trek, at 85 mph. Yet, I only passed truck traffic. There were motorcycles and cars passing me like I was standing still. I know they were doing in excess of 110 to 120 mph. Also, I didnt see 1 police officer.
Well, back to Monk in German.
