Zacatecas
The Town on a Hill We left Saltillo at about 9 am. Almost beat the traffic. Found Hwy 54 (libre), and took it all the way to Zacatecas. The road was paved. However, the speed limit, at most, allowed 80 kph (50 mph), and we are in the desert.
There were topes (speed bumps) and speed limits of 25, 35, 45 mph, for miles. There were lots of trucks, Federales, and two military check points. We arrived in Zacatecas at 300 pm-about 240 miles. Sometimes you have notice of topes, and like here, the sign may be at the tope. My practice was to follow someone, other than a truck, and not drive at night, ever.
As I saw the car in front of me bounce around like a basketball, I knew I need to slow down. I usually had someone running interference. Someone always wanted to pass you. TOPES IN THE DESERT!
Zacatecas made "A Thousand Places to See Before You Die." They have a gandola ride across the city. Once we arrived the fun started. Another experience in exercising the greatest amount of driving skills and patience. Headed for the center of the city. The center of the city was usually historical.
We visited the Catedral (1729-1752). It is Baroque style and no expense was spared, during its construction.
Saw the gondola ride and walked the stone streets. Very active musical town.
Met a group (6) BMW riders from Toluca, MX. They had a 1200GSA, 1200LT, 1200GT. They were well decked out in the latest motorcycle BMW clothing.
Tomorrow we head to Guanajuato. We will stay 2 days. This is an example of colonial Mexico-UNESCO World Heritage Site (1988). Plan to be back on the toll road. See you all.
