12th Feb

Another hot one.12th Feb
Up at 7 and off at 9 to find Route 62, copied the Route 66 logo and many of their ideas, diners etc. Only managed 292km today and was shattered at the end of it, 14-00 hours. The temp just climbed up to 35 in the shade
Thermometer at 1-45 in the shade.
Temp at 13-41 shade.jpg
and as fast as I poured liquid in it leaked out of the pores, just could not cool down after about 11-00. Some wine route some just mountains again for miles. You twisted and turned through bare walls of rock, following the railway and streams at times. Often a zig zag cut through the rock with rock hundreds of feet above and below. Scenery geologically kept changing, cliffs fractured, curving or at times gently rippling in all directions, mainly red sandstones but some blue slate.
Rocky cliffs of todays passes.

GPS shows it as gentle, not what it was.

Road running under arches blasted through the rock, clinging to the edges of the hills (with crash barriers,) if a bike hit them the rider would end up over them and headed downhill. Amazing to watch the telegraph poles following the road at times the tops were at my level. Not the place for target fixation when riding. (For the non-riders, you fixate on a target and the bike goes to it). By 1-00 had had enough, water gone, overheating so poked GPS to tell me where nearest campsite was, 6,2 km away in Oudtshoorn, R100 to camp or R300 for an aircon chalet??? Hmm 30 seconds or less and went for aircon, booked paid and was told no Electricity, estimate it will be back on at 4?? Quinton’s luck but shower works and they sell ice-cream, every cloud has a silver lining,
Tomorrow the road drops towards the seaside quite rapidly, sitting at about (340m at present) so should cool down but for sure some more cool roads.
