Livingstone from Lukaka
LivingstoneLivingstone
Got up and left for seven, headed to Chilanga and filled up for 300 mile hop to Livingstone. Even remembered to fill up 150 miles later.
Road south to Kafue as half diversions and half new surface too 2 hours to do the 60K. Did not stop as saw no signs to the dam or zoo. Got to the Livingstone turn off and lovely sweeping bends through some hills, great I thought better than long straights. Round a bend and a jacknifed lorry across the road, no warning so must have just happened. Happened to be riding to what I could see and avoided all. Few bends later and green shrubbery all don the verge, breakdown warning over here so slowed but guess it had been repaired. About 20 miles later came over a hill and could see this long straight road following a railay line into the distance. Could not get any speed up as goats and cows wandering about, not sure what they find to eat on the tarmac but they love to lick the white line. Eight police checks today for my lisence, two within 1k, keep smilling and shut up then they wanted my tax, UK tax but they want Zambian tax, I explain it is not registered in Zambia, what fine doubles. I have the hump by now so get off bike saying I am going to talk to the sargeant in the car. Massive queue behind bike and off go, he says it will be easier to pay fine, I pull all the customs paperwork out and he laughs and says just go, yells something to the constable who deals with next car get on the bike and leave. Stupid really as I could have ended up in real trouble.
Got to Livingstone, straight through and into the camp. Booked in they wanted 650k a night so put up my tent for 65. They took great delight telling me about the elephant droppings from jumbo who had wandered through last night not 10 metres from my tent (reckon they wheelbarrowed it in). Sitting eating a meal at eight and there wandering through the campsite at a crawl is one massive hippo munching the grass, took it half an hour to give me space to get to my tent. Must try for a photo but camera was seperated from me by the hippo.
Tomorrow Vic Falls.
Rode to Victoria Falls, little water so no mist and spray really, words can not describe it neither can pictures. Spent the day, well seven hours of it walking and sitting looking. So dry you can walk across the top where there is no water for several hundred yards. Got soaked by it years ago but could not see much. Saw it this time and stunning, massive, overpowering etc, etc. Did not do a bungy jump but that is some bridge now I have learnt about them.
Whhen I got back to the bike the people who annoyed me yesterday were standing by the bike, I thought the worst but the lady handed me my glasses and said they were on the floor and she did not want them to be stolen so she had waited for me to return. Offered her some cash to which she replied no I can not take that for doing my job, have a nice trip???????
Met some people who offered me a place in Lusaka, explained I was off to Botswana so he gave me his card and said any problems ring me, he runs a vehicle transfer buisness between sub saharan african countries, also an ex biker from Liverpool with some stories including meeting Charlie and Ewan when they arrived in Lusaka with his bike. Need to meet up with John to discuss roads up to Nairobi which was how I ended up in Maramba camp in the first place.
Tomorrow of to Livingstone museum in town and then the railway one to see all of the old trains and pictures of the bridge construction so only about ten km.
Supposed to be a big thunderstorm comming through so booked until Monday morning when I will head for Botswana, Hippo got a bit close last night, woke me up as he squeezed through next to my tent, scared me half to death.
