King City
Saturday 4th April
It's a lovely sunny day again with a cool breeze as we head off. The streets outside the motel were heavily marked with tyre marks or should I say tire, the crossroads had doughnut skid marks and there was also a fare bit of broken glass. It looks like the locals had quite a good night.
We decided not to come back via the coast road as the winds were very cold instead we came through Carmel valley through miles of twisty narrow roads and ended up in a tiny little town called king city in a very cheap but pleasant Motel. In a town where we felt comfortable walking around and seeing the sites.
I was told by someone that here in the USA Asians are the main owners of the small independent motels and it seems to be true we are often met by the smell of CURRY when checking in mmmmmm. I could murder a pint of Doombar and a Curry. We took a stroll down the high street and bought some supply's including a small bottle of Jameson's whiskey which went down well with our dinner form the deli counter of the local super market.
Sunday 4th April
Guess what yes the sun is shining, despite the forecast of rain. We set off back to the mountains the way we had came so we could join up with the route we were on yesterday and went in search of a very small road that was not on the map but if you zoomed right in on Google maps you could see it, it was the only road for miles that cuts through the mountains to join up with highway 1 on the coast. I would not of found it had it not been for Marcia finding this route on the Internet that someone had posted up on a cycle forum. It was fantastic we entered it through an army fort entrance and at first I was not sure if we're meant to enter but thankfully saw a sign that said public right of way. There was also a sign saying that people and vehicles that enter here agree to the right to be searched. After a few miles the road narrowed and became steeper and was often covered with a light dusting of sand or gravel I rarely got in to third gear the corners were extremely tight and narrow and thankfully not many other vehicles using it and the ones we came across would pull over and let us pass. We managed to scrape the panniers a few times again. We stopped near the top to take a few pics of the stunning views.
The descent was just as much fun but sandier than the accent, we eventually pulled out on to highway 1 to find it full of Sunday drivers :( we stopped off at a viewing area for elephant seals, the beach was smothered as far as the eye could see with them. What a smell, can't describe it but it was not pleasant. We took a few pics and got back on the bike.
We have now checked in to a motel for 3 days to do a bit of sight seeing etc been to the local supermarket for some essential supplies.
Had a swim in the pool. Now it's time to tuck in to them supplies.
