The Dansey Pass
Country
uesday 1st Dec.
Met Craig and Blanch in the morning as Craig was going to join me for a short ride to the Dansey's pass road and he was going to show me the scenic route. it was a bit cloudy first thing not cold though with a slight breeze, by the time we reached the pass the weather had brightened up and it was not long before I had to remove a layer of clothing as I was getting too hot. This is were Craig turned around and went home and I carried on across the Dansey pass. A narrow gravel road that winds its way through the mountains. there was very little traffic a few other motorbikes going the other way and a guy on a mountain bike and of course stunning views. I stopped at the Dansey pass hotel for a spot of lunch and then carried on towards Gore which was almost back at Invercargill, I found another unpaved road that heads through the mountains to Millers Flat but there was a sign saying road closed and shortly behind it a sign saying “this road is not suitable for normal vehicles” so I thought it must be open and carried on. The going was quite rough at times 1st and 2nd gear and a couple of river crossings, I was glad that the panniers were now less likely to fall off again thanks to Mark. There were quite a few gates to open and close and this little road seemed to go on for miles and I was beginning to wonder wether I had enough petrol it also started to get a little cold, I was having so much fun I had not realised how late it was and thought I should get a move on and not keep stopping to take photos. I'm not sure how many miles I road on the dirt trail and I was quite relieved to reach a paved road and the small town of Millers Flat. When I eventually got to a petrol station I thought I must of been running on fumes. I arrived in gore and found the campsite just before the rains fell. Managed to get a bed in one of the backpacker dorms and yet again its only me myself and I and no bloody WiFi.
