Topah Nevada
Monday 4th May continued
We were almost opposite a micro brewery so we went there for dinner and to sample there beers, they had six different beers so I had to sample them all. 3 of them were ok, 1 was like water, 1 a chilli beer was just wrong and hotter than a vindaloo and 1 was actually quite good so I had a pint of that to wash the food down. The meat was good but the veg tasted like tinned veg.
Tuesday 5th May
We left Tonopah in search of an abandoned hot springs and a ghost town. On the way we passed the Tomohawk test site not that you could see anything but the entrance, the site was probably miles from the road.
We had found out from the Internet that the hot springs had been abandoned but you were still able to take a soak in the natural springs. We found the springs but it had now been fenced off, there was water running from the site but it was more like a drainage ditch, we were tempted to climb the fence but we thought better of it. We found a gate but we could not open it so we set off for the Ghost town which we found but we both got the feeling we should not be there it was quite weird but the entry to it was an unpaved road through USAF land and the sign, if we read it correctly said you were allowed through the road but we're not allowed to leave it for 1 mile. On our way back from the mine we took a detour as there was an old sign that said (can't remember the name) ruins 9 miles we followed the road for 11 miles when we came to private land and had to turn around, especially as the roads did not seem to be anything like our map, we had seen a sign a way back that pointed to highway 6 so took the turn and followed this road for about 16 miles it was looking very stormy in every direction and every now and then we would get the odd spot of rain the smell was indescribable but different to when it usually rains. Thankfully the rain held off until we hit Tarmac but when it fell it was hail not rain but at least it cleaned all the dead bugs off the bike. We then headed on to Ely where we hoped to get a motel for the night.
Tomorrow we are heading to Salt Lake City in Utah, need to get some new tyres.
Wednesday 6th May
It was reasonably warm when we set off but we had only got half a mile before it turned really cold so we stopped and put on the water proofs, shortly after it was chucking it down, as we climbed the temp gauge had dropped to 2°C, and started to climb as we descended this continued for I don't know how many times but eventually the icy rain stopped we had only covered about 100 miles and we were frozen. It was another 80 miles before we found any sign of life at a small town called Delta in Utah, we had also crossed a time zone and lost an hour.
The last 130 miles were mainly dry and a tad warmer. BMW have the tyres in stock so will get them fitted tomorrow.
Shortly after checking in the heavens opened again so we have ordered a pizza.
