The 48th State
Country

Wednesday 22nd July Massachusetts. Another hot start to the day, we rode in to the town of Salem, had a walk around, as it was very hot and humid and we did not last long before we were back on the bike trying to cool down. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg From there we rode to the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site. It was the site of the first ever integrated iron works in North America that they have rebuilt as close to original as possible. It was a very interesting place although there was some repair work going on. They also had a small forge works where they were giving demonstrations on how nails were made back in the day. They are also still excavating areas around the site and have a small Museum. As it was by the river and not in the center of town it was a little less humid. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg From there we headed for Rhode Island, apparently they had a small earth quake here this morning. Traffic was horrendous especially getting through Boston. image.jpg image.jpg Thursday 23rd July Clear blue sky's and a very hot start to the day. On route to Connecticut we stopped off to take a pic of a roadside sculpture. image.jpg We came across another old ferry crossing that was just pulling in and there was only 2 bikes waiting so we did not have to wait long to board. image.jpg image.jpg After a short ferry crossing across the Connecticut river we set off for a burger at Louis Lunch in New Haven Connecticut. Allegedly the first place to serve a hamburger in USA in the year 1900. Their burgers remain unchanged and still cooked on the original grill. The place was tiny and packed with a mix of locals and tourists. One table and a few chairs, most people were getting take away. The burgers were OK nothing to shout about. image.jpg The ride was going great until we hit New York and then it was exactly as I had expected it to be. A nightmare. We took the interstate wherever possible but even that was mental. Stop start stop start, sweat pouring down my back and arms, clothes sticking to you soaked in sweat. We had a couple of near misses the worst being nearly taken out by a lane changer not looking or indicating just swerving through. The second we had just passed an accident on the left then hearing that screech of brakes from behind as the rubber necker behind us was to busy looking at the crash, then looking in the mirror hoping the guy stops in time. Thankfully he did stop in time. We are now in New Jersey and that's not much better. Friday 24th July Long hot hard and humid ride to Maryland today on the Interstate. Saturday 25th July We are in Frederick Maryland. It's hot and humid again today, not my favourite type of weather. We took a trip into town to visit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. It was very interesting but also very small. The rest of the day has been a lazy day as I am knackered. Out of all the miles we have covered so far the last 2 days have been the least enjoyable. It's been a choice of heavy traffic or endless interstate and sometimes both. I had hoped to of taken a wide birth around New York, New Jersey and Delaware and do them on the way back but we felt we were running out of time to fit in the last few states . We are planning to ride through the last 2 states before turning around and heading back to New Jersey to drop my bike off at the shipping depot on the 29th. Sunday 26th July Very hot and humid today up in the 90's today. We rode down to Virginia and through to West Virginia our 48th State. It was a good ride although a tad hot. We just have a 200 mile ride to New Jersey tomorrow where we need to sort out what we are packing with the bike to go home and what we are going to take back on the plane before we meet up with my cousin Gary in New York for our last 2 days. Monday 27th July Heavy rain during the night thankfully it had stopped for the morning. Still cloudy and humid but thankfully temperature was a lot lower. Once on the bike it was pleasant to ride in. It started to warm up later in the day and the last hour it was up in the 90's again, we had very little traffic until the last few miles but thankfully we beat rush hour and got checked in to the hotel. Tomorrow we have a day to decide how and what is going back with us and what is going back on the bike.
