May The 4th Be With You

Friday 1st May
We had a pretty good days riding to Lassen national park but sadly when we got there the road through was still closed. I was very tempted to just ride around the closed gate, but decided against it. We were both very knackered probably due to the altitude we have been riding in. And still had a fair way to go before we could find a town with motels.

Saturday 2nd May
An excellent adventure was had today. Last nights route planning really paid off. We spent 8 hours riding but only travelled about 250 miles. We had a mix of unpaved roads, twisty mountain passes and some paved roads that needed re paving. The weather was fantastic but not too hot and not windy.

Sunday 3rd May
Yosemite what a fantastic place we were only 45 miles from one of the entrances, so it did not take long to get there. The main road through is still closed but it is supposed to open tomorrow. We spent the hole day riding around exploring the roads around the park some you could barely call roads but still great fun. There was an incredible amount of forest fire damage, some I think is where they do controlled burns to reduce the risk of fires spreading, I don't know how you can tell though. It was very eire riding through the burnt out areas even the ones that were showing signs of recovery. We ended up in completely the wrong place at the end of the day and we could not find anywhere to stay we had no access to Internet or mobile phone and had to make do with the only place we could find so we are now slumming it the Cedar Lodge hotel.

Monday May the 4th be with you
Highway 120 has been opened so first stop petrol but the only gas station for miles around was an automated one and our cards do not work in them. So I asked a stranger if they would be so kind as to let me use their card and I give them the cash. They were happy to help but there card was rejected as it had just been used in the pump so her passenger was kind enough to let us use hers.
We headed on to Yosemite to the Tioga pass there was a fair bit of traffic but once on the 120 it was empty for about 10 miles then it stopped for roadworks and we sat in a jam for about 30 min as they let the re surfacing lorries up and down with their load, once past the road works for about five miles the road was in a very poor state from the winter freeze, I found my self weaving our way through a small herd of Harley's who were gingerly finding their way along the rough road, then it cleared and we managed to work our way to the front and had a clear road all though the sun was out it was getting colder as we climbed at about 9000ft we stopped by Tenaya lake to take some pictures, chatted to some mad young locals that were swimming in it but as there was a storm brewing we set off again hoping to miss but near the top it started raining and was near freezing so we stopped and put on the waterproofs, once we got to the highest point 11000ft I think the temp was down to 2c and it was now snowing thankfully not very heavily, it was not long before we were descending back in to warmer drier weather.
We headed on to Nevada. We were still quite high up and the weather could not make its mind up so we pressed on before stopping to change out of the cold weather gear. Within the space of a hundred miles we had gone from blistering hot to freezing cold then blistering hot with strong winds and even road through a small whirl wind of sand.
