Myanmar Summary
When we started with this trip, we never expected to drive through Myanmar. Apparently, it all depends on who you meet along the way and that it coincidentally fits into your schedule... We were very lucky.
It's great to be able to say that we are in South-East Asia without taking a boat or a plane, only drive. Although flying the bike over Myanmar would have been cheaper than driving through it, we havent regretted it for a moment. A shipment would have brought many worries with it, such as the loading and unloading of the motorbike, etc. We also wouldnt have seen Myanmar which would have been a pity. In the beginning we werent so keen on travelling in a group, but it turned out to be a good experience. Most people of the group were really great and it was nice after such a long time of being just the two of us. In addition, it was not as if we were stuck to each other. During the day, we were free to go wherever we wanted. The only unpleasant aspect of this trip is that we couldnt set out our own route. The travel agency had chosen a route along the tourist attractions, while these are sometimes just less interesting for us. Also, we were almost always in a hurry: arrive somewhere and the next day we were already gone. The tour guide and the guides were rather worthless, you expect them to know everything about the trip, but that wasnt the case. We wouldnt recommend the tour guide but it appears to be the only way to get with your own vehicle through Myanmar at a somewhat affordable price. You can contact our tour guide through joern.schlag[at]web[dot]de
About Myanmar itself we have a very good feeling. After India, it was so nice that people were friendly to us again. We have seen some beautiful scenery, especially in the far west and far east of the country. We also had some really nice meals in Myanmar, but that is merely due to the group: we spent more money than we would have done if we were alone. Travelling in Myanmar is a bit more expensive than in India, certainly if you have to pay for a hotel. Hotels need a special permit in order to be allowed to receive foreign tourists. This makes it difficult to find cheap guesthouses.
