Popayan to Ipiales
January 19, 2014:
Spent a couple days in Popayan, cleaned the moto and waited out a rain day.
There's a hill on the NE side of town that provides nice views of the city and surrounding mountains. Unfortunately the mountains and the Volcano Purace were clouded in during my time here.

This path was created by leaf cutter ants. There were other trees closer to the nest but it seems they like the leaves on this tree.

To the right of the bottle you can see a couple leaves being carried.

January 20, 2014:
Headed for Ipiales with the plan to cross into Ecuador on the 21st. The ride from Popyan to Pasto was a fantastic ride through the mountains:

Arrived in Ipiales around 4 pm, got settled into a place to stay and then took a short ride to Las Lajas to visit the Las Lajas Sanctuary:
In the mid 1700's and Amerindian woman and her deaf and dumb daughter were caught in a terrible storm and took refuge in the gorge. During the storm the woman felt a presence and when looking up saw an image of the Virgin Mary on the rocks. At that moment here daughter was cured, able to hear and speak.
Shortly after that a blind man wondered for ten years to different villages collecting money to build a chapel on the sight. When he returned, his sight was restored.
Building on the sanctuary began in 1916 and was completed in 1949 at the original sight of the chapel:

When I returned to the hotel I gave the moto a good looking over and noticed I had an engine oil leak, not good. It wasn't much however, leaks only get worse and I've got a long way to go. Could be the engine shaft seal.

I'm back in Medellin, arrived yesterday. Decided to ride the 522 miles from Ipiales to Medellin and get to moto fixed.
