Moto Issues Jakarta
Country

May 31, 2017:

I’m still on the trail, currently in Jakarta, Indonesia. I’ve been held up, however I’m hoping to get back in the saddle soon. So this is what’s been happening.

January 20, 2017:

I finally made it out of Cambodia and arrived in Bangkok for repairs. The rear drive unit was in very bad shape, wasn’t holding oil. After a few days of inspection and checking for parts I was informed the repairs could not be completed before my Thailand moto permit expired, Feb 11, 2017. Best option, get the Moto to Malaysia where parts might be readily available and I wouldn’t have issue with how long the motorcycle can remain in country. A few days and emails later I decided to ride to Georgetown, Malaysia in hopes of repairs. A 701 mile ride with a rear drive unit that’s not holding oil. I departed Bangkok on Feb 02 and arrived in Georgetown the next day. I very stressful ride. I stopped five times to add oil to the rear drive unit, it just leaked out but it cooled the gears and provided a bit of lubrication. I did check if any oil was remaining in the unit, twice, both times it was less than 20 ml. I think that equates to half an ounce. Oh well, the unit held and I made the run.

After a few days I received good news that a new rear drive unit was available in country and that parts and labor would be covered under warranty!

Work completed, I decided to take a side trip and fly to Sri Lanka:

St. Patraicks Day in Kandy!

Returned from Sri Lanka and shipped the moto to Belawan, Indonesia. Once in Indonesia I rode to Lake Toba and took a ferry out to Samosir Island and stayed in the town of Tuk Tuk for a few days.

Departed Tuk Tuk and the moto started to intermittently run rough. It was a five day ride to Jakarta where I was was heading and each day things got a bit worse. I arrived in Jakarta on May 26 and took went to the BMW shop the next day. After ten days of trouble shooting, both throttle bodies are bad. Parts on order, two to three weeks.

Ferry, crossing from Sumatra to Java:

Gail,

I've been following you on this since you hit the trail after retiring. Sounds like everything you said it would be back when we were in the desert. Awesome, man! I'm retiring in a few months, now. If you ever make it back to the U.S., look me up and we'll have a beer!
