Venezuela 31 Oct 13

I'm back. Had a some difficulties with my computer however, everything seems to be working fine now. I'm currently in Caracas, had the computer checked and I also need to get more pages for the passport at the US Embassy.
So far everything has been great here. I meet up with a German guy, Mika, that lives in Bolivia, at the border and we rode for a couple days through the mountains to Merida. I stopped in Merida for a few days and he kept on his way to Brazil heading back to Bolivia.

Somewhere in the mountains at 11,000 ft:

Stopped to top of the tank. 12.5 liters for 1.21 Bolivares. 45 Bolivares to 1 USD, unofficial. The gas is almost free and actually is sometimes. Mika topped off his tank with 5 liters and they didn't want any money.

While in Merida I decided to meet up with a tour guide in Los Llanos region and view the wildlife. The area is a large flood plain and habitat for most of Venezuela's wild animals.

There are very few houses in the region and the only power supply is if you have a generator. Rode by this place on horseback.

Cayman are everywhere. They feed mostly on piranha and the waters are full of them:

Lodge where I stayed. There was a pod of river dolphins that lived here. They were dark in color and had a short snout. I tried but never got a good photo:

Not far from this spot we came into a pod of pink river dolphins, again didn't get a good photo. It was really quite amazing to see them.

Fast critters and not very good at staying still for a photo

On the last afternoon we went for a drive, I was hoping to find a giant ant eater when we found his cousin. It's called a honey bear because it only eats honey but it's related to the ant eater.

The area is mostly used for cattle and horse ranching. One thing that was quite interesting was how many whitetail deer there are here.

The sun was just setting when we spotted this guy. He was on the other side of water and about 250 meters out. I saw my ant eater!

The area is famous for giant anaconda's however we didn't find one. It's the end of the rainy season and still very wet so they are spread out and difficult to locate. It was a great two day adventure.
