San Jose
July 06, 2013
Decided to stay in San Jose for another day and take some photo's. It didn't quite work out though. I was in one of the parks and some guy came up to me and said he and his wife needed help with something. He didn't speak much English and at first it seemed strange but after a few minutes I understood what he was trying to tell me. Him and his wife were from Nicaragua and on Saturday afternoons they volunteer English classes to other Nicaraguans and poor local people. He wanted me to teach a two hour class, sounded interesting so I agreed. We went to a private language school and he introduced me to his wife, she spoke fairly good English. The school offers them the use of a few classrooms on Saturdays and she explained that they solicit English volunteers to teach the classes. I was teamed with a young Nicaraguan girl and assigned a classroom with six students. At first it was quite awkward, I really didn't fully understand what was expected of me or what I should do. My assistant handed me some papers that had English sayings and on one and the other had pictures of items they had learned in the last session. It was actually a lot of fun, with a little bit of acting things out and a few drawings It didn't take long before everyone was participating and having a good time learning. It was quite funny at times. Everyone was very appreciative and wanted me to come back every Saturday.
There are three parks near the city center that adjoin each other, Parque Morazan, Parque Jardin de Paz and Parque Espana and are a focal spot for weekend activities. The city sets up different games, ping pong tables, skate board ramps, foosball table, board games and many other things. In Jardin de Paz they had a DJ playing music along with some people handing out hola hoops. Everyone was having a great time with this!
