I'm still going strong!
August 11, 2015:
I'm still on the trail, at the present time I'm in Malawi in the village of Cape Maclear on the southern part of Lake Malawi. Everything is good I just haven't had wifi or a reliable connection in order up load photos to my Blog. The place I staying now, Indaba Lodge, has a wifi hot spot however I need to purchase 100MB access cards which don't allow me to do much, oh well, it is what it is.
Since my last post I've crossed through Zimbabwe stopping in Victoria Falls for a few days. At the time there was a lot of water passing over them and the heavy mist obscured much of the views however they were still very impressive. After Vic Falls I rode to the village of Binga near Lake Kariba. I was hoping to ride northeast to the A1 however after seeing the condition of the road and speaking to a local Professional Hunter I decided it wasn't the best plan. Lots of loose sand, sharp rocks and areas that had been washed out. After Binga I headed for Kwekwe and somewhere between the village of Nkayi and Kwekwe I blew out my rear shock. I was still able to ride however it was like being on a 600 lb. pogo stick. The only option was to head back to South Africa for repairs. It was two days of long riding to Pretoria but I made it. It took a few days to find someone that could do the repairs, I wanted to replace both the rear and front shock with after market ones. Once the shocks were replace I then had some issues with the rear electronic suspension unit and that took a few extra days to sort out. All in all it took 18 days to get everything repaired.
While in Pretoria I was able to get a VISA for Mozambique and on the 30th of July I headed for the border arriving in Bilene on the 31st. From there I rode north along the coast to Tofo and then up to Vilanculos. The beaches are nice however the weather was a bit cool and it was quite windy. On August 05 I crossed into Malawi spending a few days in Blantyre and then ridding up to Cape Maclear which is located on the southern part of Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear's a tourist destination however it's very much a traditional village, most of the people live in grass or mud huts and the streets are no more than narrow sand paths winding around the huts. Lots of chlldren.
The plan now is to hang out here for a week or so and then work my way up along the west side of the lake. At some point I'll cross over into Zambia and then north to Tanzania.
When I'm able to connect to a good wifi connection I'll post some photo's.
I'm really enjoying this journey!
