Mongolia July 28, 2016
July 28, 2016:
Onward to Mongolia! I was informed that the borders, Russian & Mongaolian, open at 8 am and it's best to be there in advance. I arrived early however there was a long line of trucks and a few vehicles. I figured I'd just ride to the front of the line and all would be good when they open the gate. Nope, a female guard was having none of that. Even after a fairly good attempt at humoring her, she laughed, she sent me back.

Damn, more vehicles had arrived. There was a couple BMW's in line and I jumped in with them about 150 meters back. A group of Chinese with two vehicles and two motos that where on the last leg of a journey through Europe and Asia. They spoke good English and invited me to join in with them crossing through.

Once the gate opened, it was like the start of a race. No sense of, next in line, it was a full out dash to the front. It took just over two hours to check out of Russia.. No sense of urgency whats so ever. The agents were friendly and helpful, just slow. One we got through customs . we had to stop again at the actual border (fence) and have our passports checked.
Not sure what the monument in the back ground is, everyone took a photo of it so I did as well.

The Russians patrol the border fence on horse back. I got the impression they don't like having cameras pointed at them.

Once to the Mongolian border crossing we were stopped at a small gate and needed to show passport and vehicle information and pay a small vehicle tax. Quite time consuming and disorganized. Finally got through the gate and to border control. It was amazing, everyone in the place was on FB. Even the agent that checked and stamped my passport had to stop often to check FB on her phone. Once the passport was stamped I went to customs to clear the moto. After waiting for an hour or more, and being the next to be served, the agent closed the window. No explanation, she didn't even look at me. It was lunch, 2 pm - 3 pm. Everyone left. It was really quite humorous. We made light of it and had some lunch ourselves.

These two Russians were good company. The one on the left could speak some English and was a a big outdoors man. They were heading into Mongolia to do some fishing. Showed me lots of photo from last years hunting adventures. He gave me a small bottle of vodka as a travel gift.

To everyones surprise, the agents returned promptly to their stations at 3 pm, however, it took 18 minutes for everyone to check FB and phone messages. Incredible. Then something amazing happened, they actually took mine and the others documents and processed us through, we were all done by 4 pm. Everyone compared vehicle documents to make sure we all had the same stamps. One of the motos was missing a stamp, a quick talk with customs and it was done. It was hilarious.
One last stop for insurance and we were gone:
