Got up early and headed for Guatemala. The border is 11 miles from San Ignacio so I arrived before much was going on. Departing Belize is a pretty simple process, pay 37.50 Belize departing tax, turn in the bike permit and get a couple stamps.
Entering Guatemala is also a simple process however the border agents are in no hurry at all.
It was a great morning to ride, overcast and 81 deg. My plan was to ride to Flores and stop for the day to get information on road conditions.
As soon as I crossed the border into Guatemala the animals were in the road. As much as they prize their horse's here, I don't understand why they let them graze freely along the road sides. They're everywhere along with the dogs, pigs, chickens and turkeys all running across the road constantly.
Flores is a small village that's an island in Lake Peten Itza. It's a beautiful little town, very colorful and clean. Narrow streets and walk ways between the buildings. It's the off season but there are quite a few tourist here.

I only saw a few dead animals along the road, one horse and a few dogs. If something edible gets hit, it's for sale at a road side food stand.

Woke up early and headed for Coban, excellent ride. Overcast and 85 deg. through lush green mountains. Other than the animals the road conditions are very good.

Great ride today from Coban to Sacapulas. The road winds through the mountains and passes through a few small towns. Spent a good two hours or more on dirt, about 20 miles, any rougher and it would have been very difficult. The rains have come, usually raining in the afternoons and evenings, the road is mostly gravel type stuff so it dries out good but there are a lot of ditches and rocks from washouts. The people along the way are constantly doing repairs, many of them children. Quite a few very narrow single lane areas where the bigger slides happen.
Most of the day was overcast and the temp was around 75 deg. Didn't have much time to look around while riding and at times it was difficult to find a safe place to stop, however it's a beautiful ride and a must do if your in Guatemala.
Started thundering and lighting so I stopped for the day in Sacapulas. A small hill side village, not much here. I think I'm staying at the only hotel in town. At the moment there's no electricity or running water in the village, not sure why but from what I can understand they both should be coming back online later.
While the bike was parked in front of the hotel people had their kids taking turns sitting on it. It's a market weekend so lots of people from the remote area are here.
Walked around town and had some local food and then stopped and had some beer at a small shop. Didn't take long for the locals to know there was a gringo in town drinking beer.
Have water, still no electricity, I let one of the women in the hotel kitchen use one of my headlamps, don't think they have ever used one or maybe even seen one before, very happy. I'll get it back in the morning.

The road to Lake Atitlan via Huehuetenango is another twisty mountain road, great for riding. It was cool and overcast most of the day and at the higher elevations I was in the clouds. Visibility on the road was less than 30 ft at times, not a comfortable feeling with all the hazards there are.
I was hoping to see the volcano's at Lake Atitlan today but the weather is no cooperating. Hopefully in the morning it will clear enough to get a couple photo's.
Staying in the village of San Antonio and have a great view of the lake from the hotel room. It's a small hill side village with very narrow streets. I stopped for awhile in front of the church, the town center and . A few street vendors but other than that not much happening. There were a few women selling scarfs and shirts and they seem to enjoy picking on me. Not sure of everything said but it was funny and we laughed.
At this point of the journey, Guatemala has been my favorite country to ride in. From June 4, 2013

I noticed that a lot of mechanic shops advertise they have a tall mechanic. Each one advertising theirs is "taller". People in Guatemala must prefer tall mechanics for some reason. Now, I'm not sure if it's false advertising or not but I saw a couple mechanics and unless 5'6" is tall for a mechanic here, something's up.

I was told there was a bridge out and I would have to make a river crossing trough two sections of the river. It could be up to half meter deep but most likely less. I was a bit concerned but when I got to the spot, I was actually disappointed.

Village laundry day. Many of the villages have a central washing place, one big cement tank with smaller tanks inserted along the inside wall. Laundry day is a social event where the women can gossip and spread the village "news".
Arrived in Antigua, the ride from San Antonio was fantastic, it seems like they built the roads specifically for motorcycles.
The town of Antigua is all cobble stone streets with lots of cafe's and restaurants all established in the old buildings. It took some searching to find a place near the center of town that would accommodate the moto, Hotel Casa Rustica, they have double doors and let me put it in the lobby.
I haven't seen the volcano as of yet, overcast and then it started raining, maybe in the morning.
