Uganda Jan 25, 2016
January 25, 2016:
I'm still in Fort Portal, it took two days to get the blog updated, wifi was intermittent so loading photos was very time consuming. Luckily the place I'm staying has lots of cold beer. It's been very hazy however things cleared up some today and I went for a short ride toward the DRC border. Not much to see but a nice ride.
I'd like to share a little of my day in Uganda with you.
The road goes through a mountain range and some of the curves are quite sharp. At one of the curves a truck hauling some armored UN vehicles was having difficulty navigating through the bend and was holding up traffic. He'd gotten himself wedged in against the guardrail, ya I know, guard rails in Africa! Anyway, there was a church group that decided it would be a great opportunity to hold service. Lots of singing, dancing and getting down on knees going on. One of the ladies took my had and said a short prayer, I think it was a prayer. There was even a guy filming the service.

Finally the driver managed to get the truck free making just enough room for everyone to get through. There were three other trucks coming up the road behind him, all the same size carrying the same load. Important fact for the story.
Further down the hill I saw this. At first I thought maybe someone had been run over, but I think it means, Blind Curve.

I rode out 50 miles and turned around, the terrain got flat and there wasn't much to see. On the way back I met this guy, I turned around and asked for a photo, At first I thought the pig was dead, no, it was alive and not liking the ride. I'd be a bit nervous not having a helmet too.

Ok, so after the truck incident I had seen this section where the trucks weren't able to get around the curve so they had just flattened out the guardrail with their trailers. I wanted to get a photo of it, I was sure something else was going to happen on the way back up the hill if another truck came. There were three damaged corners however this was the worst of them.

Here's what I was looking for! This is just what the other four trucks were, same size and load, that I had seen when I was coming down the hill. Now at this point the truck is not wedged against the guardrail, there's about six inches of space, and there's no damage to the guardrail from the previous four trucks that had navigated this curve. There's no room for anyone or anything to get by and the truck can not go forward.

I'm thinking the driver will just reverse and take a wider approach, logical right?
Wrong, just go for it!

This is the point where the tires are spinning and he was going, nowhere.

It took a minute and a couple more tries, however the driver finally realized he wasn't going to make it and reversed just enough to let the few of us get past.
I stopped to get a bottle of water and this guy walked past. Not sure what he had going on however he understand the importance of dressing in layers. He was bit unorthodox about it but he seemed to understand the basic concept.

These types of things are so common, I sometimes don't take the time to appreciate them. Today I did and wanted to share.
Oh, and we just had a small earthquake!
