Guyana

Some people in Rotainopolis told me there was a motorcycle rally gong on in Boas Vista so I decided to spend the night and see what that was about. Met a few dual sport riders and got a lot of good information on roads and weather. Didn't meet anyone that had done the road from Lethem to Georgetown, Guyana.
Got up early and rode to Guyana on the 16th, 80 miles to the border. Checking out of Brazil was quick and checking into Guyana was easy it just took a couple hours to get the moto documents. I needed insurance and had to ride into Lethem to purchase it, couple miles. The border officials are very helpful and friendly they just move slow. They drive on the left side of the road here and it always takes some getting used to, especially when pulling out into traffic.

I didn't have any good information on the road from Lethem to Georgetown, 353 miles, so I spent the good part of the day inquiring what to expect. I met a guy at the hotel that had just driven the road a week earlier and was heading back the next day. He told me it's a bit rough however with a moto it should take me about 12 hours and I'll be fine. I decided to start the ride at 04:30 the next morning.

At just over five hours into the ride I met this.
Kurupkari River ferry. The sign states the ferry runs every hour on the hour 06:00 - 18:00. I arrived at 09:43, and had traveled 133 miles, I felt lucky that I would catch the next crossing in a few minutes. I can see the ferry and at 10:00 there is nothing happening.. I got out the binoculars and saw the crew was under a tree relaxing. At 10:45, nothing, crew still just hanging out. It's hot, real hot. At 10:50, a fuel truck I passed an hour ago has arrived. One of the guys tells me the ferry will be coming soon. 11:20 the ferry starts and pulls away from the shore. Then it pushes back to shore, hangs out a few minutes and then comes across.
I had to ask,
Me - You could see me here waiting and the ferry is supposed to run every hour.
Ferry Guy - Yes, but we won't make a crossing for a motorcycle or a person, there has to be a vehicle.
Me - But when the truck arrived you still took your time coming across, it wasn't on the hour?
Ferry Guy -Yes, we wanted to make sure no one was coming from the other side, so we waited, we don't like to cross empty.
Me - What if no other vehicle had arrived?
Ferry Guy - Then you would have to go back to Lethem and come back tomorrow. The first crossing is at six in the morning and there is usually a vehicle waiting at that time.
Me - Really!
Ferry Guy - Just a confused look.
It was a :15 minute crossing.

It took me 13 hours and 45 minutes to ride 272.6 miles. Every meter of it was torture. Stopped in Linden for the night, had some chinese food and three cold beers.
